Kammok Roo Camping Hammock Review

Launched through Kickstarter back in 2011, Kammok claims itself as “the world’s best camping hammock.” Spacious, durable and colorful, the Kammok Roo Camping Hammock is loaded with features to back up its claim.

Why sit when you can lie down, right? This superb quality hammock comes with a suspension system that is easy to handle, and the entire setup can be put together in a matter of few minutes. Read more to see if the Kammok Roo is the right hammock for you.

Product Performance

Comfort: The Kammok Roo Camping Hammock is incredibly comfortable and makes for a great camping hammock or a campside lounger. The proprietary “LunarWave” diamond ripstop nylon feels great on the skin and is strong enough to support two (very close) friends. Simply put, sleeping in the Roo feels incredibly comfortable.

Part of what makes the Kammok Roo so comfortable is that setup is so versatile, you can really hang it almost anywhere on your hike. However, you’ll want to purchase a set of Python Straps if you want to comfortably set up your hammock in various spaces.

Weight: Weighing in at 23 oz with the included slings, the Roo is a good choice for the ultralight backpacker. However, the slings are rather basic and you’ll want to upgrade to another pair if you are really serious about hammock camping, which may add to the weight. Like all parachute hammocks adding rainflys and bug nets will increase the total weight.

The Kammok Roo Camping Hammock also has a carrying capacity of 500 pounds. With its size, it’ll be hard to find someone that can’t comfortably fit in the Roo.

Versatility: The Roo is incredibly versatile and has a ton of separate accessories that are available for purchase. The Kammock Roo comes with tree slings, although they are rather limited and you’ll have to pray for two perfectly positioned trees every time you want to set up your Roo. The Glider rainfly and Dragonfly mosquito net transforms the Roo into an all-season camping shelter. However when combined with the price point of the Roo and additional cost of the Python straps, buying a full set up can be a costly affair – especially when compared to the Serac Sequoia or ENO SingleNest hammocks, which include daisy chain straps right out of the box.

Once you do have a full set up, the Roo is incredibly easy to use and can be set up almost anywhere. It’s comfortable and you’ll have a good time relaxing in the hammock at night.

Conclusion

The Kammok Roo Camping Hammock is a premium parachute hammock that feels incredibly comfortable to sleep in. It’s numerous accessories can turn the Roo into your primary shelter year round, although the steep price point to do so may deter many people from committing to using a Roo. However, for those that want a guaranteed night of comfort as well as a rugged and durable product, the Roo can be a good choice.

Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) SingleNest Hammock Review

The Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) SingleNest Hammock is a popular hammock that serves as a good lightweight hammock for camping or casual use. It weighs in at 17 oz, but is a bit narrower than we’d like. It’s easy to set up and take down when using daisy chain style tree straps. Made with durable parachute nylon, it is a good choice for a 3 season hammock, with the narrow frame making it a bit less suitable for winter weather.

Read more below to find out if the SingleNest is right for you.

Product Performance

Comfort: The ENO SingleNest Hammock wasn’t the most comfortable hammock, but it was a good balance of weight, ease of use and comfort. The smaller size of the SingleNest makes it a little less relaxing to use than larger hammocks like the Serac Sequoia, although some may find the comfort tradeoff acceptable in exchange for the smaller size.

In the summer, the SingleNest performed well enough with just a sleeping bag and pad, but colder temperatures would require more accessories.

As a casual lounger, the SingleNest performed well. The smaller size made it easy to use the hammock as a chair and it’s a great piece of camp furniture if you do not intend to use it as your primary shelter.

Weight and Size: The ENO SingleNest tops out at 17oz, making it a fairly light hammock at face value. However, keep in mind this is without any suspension systems or upgrades such as a bug net or rain fly. It supports up to 400 pounds with its durable parachute nylon.

Durability: With triple stitched seams and stretchy parachute nylon, the Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) SingleNest Hammock is durable and performs well in all conditions. There was some slight fraying on the ropes and pouch, but otherwise the hammock held up beautifully. Expect to get great mileage out of your SingleNest.

Versatility: The Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) SingleNest Hammock does not come with any suspension and you won’t be able to set it up right from the get go. Daisy chain tree straps can be purchased from many different manufacturers including ENO, but that brings the total price to set up your hammock to just a shade under $100. Additional rainflys and bug nets can also be purchased.

The positive features about this hammock is that the SingleNest is smaller than most hammocks which makes it fit easily between trees that would normally be too close together. It’s also easy to get a good hang when there is less material to mess around with. Generally speaking, the SingleNest is a versatile hammock, once you purchase the accessories to surround it with.

Conclusion

At its price point, the Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) SingleNest Hammock is a bit expensive, especially when compared to the Serac Classic and Bear Butt hammocks which are cheaper and include the daisy chain tree straps for set up straight out of the box. However, with a huge range of colors to choose from and the versatility of a smaller hammock, the SingleNest can be a good choice if you’re looking for a colorful alternative to the larger hammocks that dominate the market.

Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series Review

For the dedicated hammock camper that wants an all-in-one package, look no further than the Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series. What makes the Hennessy stand out? With a built-in bug net, ridge line and an included tarp, the Hennessy comes with everything you need to start camping with it right out of the bag. It’s spacious and features an asymmetrical design to make it easier to get a flat lay.

While it has a few setbacks, overall the Hennessy is incredibly solid and great for backpacking or car camping. The price point may be a bit daunting to some, but with its impressive bulk of features, it may prove a good value. Check out the details below!

Product Performance

Comfort: The Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series shines when it comes to comfort. Sporting an asymmetrical design, it makes it incredibly easy to get a flat lay and make the most of the available space. The Hennessy has guy lines that can be set up to give you extra shoulder space. While the material itself is a little rough and less comfortable than some other hammocks we reviewed, that problem goes away once you’re in a sleeping bag and drifting off to sleep.

However because it comes with a ridge line and bug net, the Hennessy is reserved for laying down only. Sitting up is possible, though not very comfortable with ridge line getting in the way. The positive is that the ridge line comes with a small mesh pouch for you to store small items before you go to sleep. The built-in bug net is a great feature, although it cannot be removed so it may be difficult to get an unobstructed view of the stars.

Weight and Size: The great features of the Hennessy Expedition comes at a cost – the weight. Large in size, the Hennessy Expedition weighs in at a whopping 41oz (though this includes a 10oz rainfly that can be left at home if camping in clear weather). The Hennessy also has a listed weight limit of 250 lbs, a bit lower than we’d like especially with a hammock as heavy duty as this.

Durability: The Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series is made with some of the toughest and most durable fabric dested, a 210 denier nylon with double stitched seams. The fabric is burly and will be a welcome addition if there is any rain or snow.

All hammocks can be used with a rainfly, but the Hennessy comes with its own system to suspend it on the ridge line.  A small plastic clip and friction knot make setting up the rainfly a breeze. However, the rainfly itself is a bit small and its asymmetrical diamond design will not offer great protection in heavy storms. The rainfly is better reserved for small squalls and showers and if heavy rains are in the forecast, a hexagonal rainfly may be a safer option.

Versatility: The heavy bulk of the Hennessy Expedition may deter ultralight backpackers from using it, but it is still a versatile hammock and easy to use. It features long ropes that makes set up versatile, but compared to its competitors, it is a bit more difficult to pitch. The included tree straps are incredibly short and serve only to act as a bit of protection for the bark. Setting up the hammock requires tying the rope through the straps and there is nothing to help you with adjusting tension after you hang it up.

One popular option to speed up the setup is to purchase a pair of climbing carabiners and 4 rappel rings. The rope can be looped through the rappel rings to quickly set up the hammock and also allow for quick tension adjustments. However, this is an additional purchase which adds even more bulk to the already heavy Hennessy.

Conclusion

The Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series is a great hammock for a beginner backpacker looking for an all-in-one solution. However it’s heavy weight and difficult set up make it less attractive for dedicated backpackers. Nevertheless, the wide range of features offers a good value and justifies its top price point.

Serac Sequoia Ripstop Double Camping Hammock Review

When you go camping, you’re looking for gear that is high quality, durable and functions well. You want to make sure that your gear will perform when you’re out in the wilderness. If you’ve already decided to ditch the tent and started to look into camping hammocks, there are a few things you need to know. A good camping hammock should be very strong so that you do not fall. It should be breathable so that you stay comfortable. And it should be lightweight and easy to bring with you on your trip.

If you’re a frequent adventurer, you’ll want a camping hammock that is truly versatile. There are many camping hammocks out on the market and all have their own strengths and weaknesses. One of our favorite hammocks is the Serac Sequoia Double Camping Hammock. A follow-up from the company that brought you one of the best hammocks of last year, the Sequoia offers a lot of value in a functional package.

Product Performance

Features: What differentiates the Serac Sequoia from many of its competitors is the numerous features and excellent design that went into each hammock. It comes equipped with a pair of multi-loop tree straps that makes setup painless. Instead of worrying about whether your knotwork is good enough, you’ll be ready to hang in seconds.

Another thing that sets the Sequoia apart is the inclusion of compression straps and a whistle buckle in case of emergencies. The compression straps makes the total package even smaller for easy packing.

Comfort: The Serac Sequoia is also the most comfortable hammock we’ve tried (next to the Serac Classic Camping Hammock which we have reviewed here). Extra long and extra wide, the hammock is roomy enough for two people and using it solo gives you an amazingly comfortable space to relax in. The nylon fabric feels amazing while the Diamondweave ripstop ensures that its durable and has performed well in all our tests. Some cheaper alternatives we’ve tried ripped easily and used nylon that was very uncomfortable.

Weight and Size: The Sequoia packs into a compact size thanks to the stuff sack and compression straps. It was easy to fit everything including the straps and carabiners. The Sequoia was small enough to carry around anywhere on a day to day basis and the weight was not noticeable when carried in a hiking bag.

Conclusion

The Serac Sequoia was incredibly comfortable and the packability was a huge plus. Taking it on every camping and hiking trip was a no brainer. The durability is something that every product should strive for. Most importantly, the size and comfort makes the Sequoia one of the best hammocks you can choose for your trips. It outperformed the competition and the price point is more than competitive. You cannot go wrong with the Sequoia whether you’re just a casual hammocker who likes to relax in the backyard or a hardcore backpacker taking it out for multiple days in the backcountry.
